Tips to choose best yarn for your crochet projects

When you are going to start a  crochet project you must choose a yarn and this task is not always easy. That’s why I will give you some tips that will be very useful when choosing your yarn.

1- Most of the patterns we buy or find for free on the internet have information about the yarn it is made with. You find in the patterns the yarn you should use, the recommended crochet hook, and the amount of yarn you will need among other things.

2- But we don’t always have access to the yarn the designer has chosen for the project. It is time to find a yarn to replace it and for that, we must take into account several things. You have to choose a yarn with the same gauge and fiber type, if possible, to get the same results.

3- If you decide to use a yarn of a different fiber you should know that the result may not be the same. Each fiber has different characteristics in terms of the drape it has when crocheted or the definition of  stitches.

4- You should always do a gauge with the yarn and hook you plan to use to check if the result is similar. You should also adjust the size of your crochet hook according to your yarn tension.

5-Finally, you should know that the patterns tell you the amount of yarn you need for the project, but you should buy more yarn because you may need it. If your tension is different from the pattern designer you can use more or less yarn. You may also make a mistake or have a problem along the way and need more yarn.

I hope this information has been useful to you. If you have any questions you can ask me, I will be happy to help you.

  1. Thank you for explaining how you can substitute different yarns in patterns. I’ve been wanting to use some locally made yarn for my latest projects. I’ll be sure to keep this in mind and use it to make sure I get the same kind of result from the patterns.
